Stutz, Archambault-Leger take combined titles to wrap up Canadian nationals{mosimage}Whistler, B.C. – Upon conclusion of the 2006 Pontiac GMC Championships Tuesday, Paul Stutz and Véronique Archambault-Léger were awarded top prize in the combined event, which combines athletes’ times in the downhill and both slalom runs to determine a champion.

Stutz, with a time of three minutes and 2.68 seconds took the men’s crown, followed by Trevor White in 3:04.72 and Jan Hudec in 3:06.24.

On the women’s side it was Archambault-Léger in top spot with a time of 3:05.24, followed by Quebec provincial team athlete Aileen Farrell in 3:07.65 and Alberta provincial team skier Janelle Miller in third with a time of 3:08.40.

The 2006 Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships took place in Whistler, B.C. March 20-28, allowing many of Canada’s promising young national team hopefuls to battle head-to-head with some of the nation’s most recent World Cup medalists and Olympic athletes such as Thomas Grandi, François Bourque and Emily Brydon.

National titles were awarded as follows:

Women’s downhill: Britt Janyk
Men’s downhill: Jeffrey Frisch

Women’s super G: Britt Janyk
Men’s super G John Kucera

Women’s giant slalom: Christina Lustenberger
Men’s giant slalom John Kucera

Women’s slalom: Brigitte Acton
Men’s slalom Michael Janyk

Women’s combined: Véronique Archambault-Léger
Men’s combined Paul Stutz

The conclusion of the 2006 Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships also marked the end of the Coupe Pontiac Cup standings.

Whistler’s Alison Leighton won the women’s standings with 196 points and took home a $5,000 prize awarded by General Motors for her stellar performances throughout the season on the Pontiac Cup. Quebec’s Aileen Farrell came in a close second with 193 points, earning her $1,500. Marie-Elaine Lépine, also from the Quebec provincial team, walked away with a $1,000 prize for her third place finish with 179 points.

Jonathan Robert (Cumberland, ON) was awarded $5,000 by General Motors for winning the men’s title by a mere two points over Patrick Wright (Oakville, ON) and Jeff Hume (Whistler, BC) who tied for second with 144 points. Wright and Hume will be splitting the $2,500 prize.
