The town of Soldeu-Grandvalira, Andorra will have to wait one more day for its World Cup debut. Persistent strong winds in the Pyrenees Mountains has forced officials to cancel a women’s giant slalom scheduled here today (Feb. 10).

The race, originally scheduled to start at 10 AM local time, was bumped back two hours when overnight gusts hit 100 mph destroying banners and lifting finish tents into the Valira d’Orient river. When the two-hour delay had passed and the winds were still howling, they gave it another half hour before canceling the race.

Today’s race, the first of a three-race technical weekend in the small principality between the borders of Spain and France, was intended to replace a race canceled in Courchevel, France in mid December. That race was called due to heavy snowfall.

Another GS, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been moved to Sunday and a slalom will be attempted on Saturday.
