Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club forms cycling club{mosimage}The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club has announced the formation of a summer-season cycling club. The SSWSC Cycling Club has been structured to give everyone, regardless of age, that opportunity. Although there is considerable emphasis placed on the development of youth, the club is open for anyone with a competitive spirit.

Local and national businesses supporting this effort include Moots, Ski & Bike Kare, Sore Saddle Cyclery, Steamboat Village Brokers, E-Caps/ Hammer Gel
Back Country Provisions, Ski Haus, and Fischer Skis.

There are two distinct youth programs: the Development Team and the Elite Road Team. The Development Team is for young riders ages 11 to 16. This team is primarily focused on mountain bike competition and basic skill development, with an introduction to road cycling. The team stresses bike handling skills, basic mechanical knowledge and competitive mental preparation.

The Elite Road Team is for athletes ages 15-23 who are committed to achieving excellence in any endeavor they pursue. The Elite Team develops advanced ‘peaking’ techniques and personalized training to reach specified goals.

The Development Team is for all athletes ages 13-16 who are interested in racing mountain bikes, participating in group cycling activities and learning about road racing. Aaron Haffey and Luke Brosterhous will coach the development team. The team will develop mechanical, competitive, and bike handling skills.

The development team focuses upon competitive mountain biking, but will learn the training techniques of the elite road team and also experience group road rides.

The Development Team will race in the local Town Challenge Series and have the opportunity to race in the Winter Park Mountain Bike Series as well as select regional and national road racing events (including the Junior National Road Cycling Championships [Park City Utah, August 2004]).

Coached by Tom Davis and assisted by Aaron Haffey and Marc Bennett, the Team will focus on nutritional, mental, and physical ‘peaking’ techniques that will ensure success in Road Racing Competition. Each member of the Team will have personalized goal-setting meetings, monitored physical progress, and specialized training attention.

The team’s extrinsic goal is to podium at Junior and Espoir National Road Cycling Championships while the team’s intrinsic goal is to develop Competitive Leadership Skills.

The primary coach will handle all travel and lodging, competition schedules, and general athlete management (including category upgrade, special invitations to selection camps, acquisition of equipment, athlete media exposure etc.) Elite Road Team members will compete in pre-selected regional and national events that will prepare them for a successful mid-August to early September ‘physical peak.’
