The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) has announced the hiring of Gene Bridgewater as the program’s new head FIS/Post Graduate coach.

“He’s really well-rounded and has a great demeanor that is going to work well with our program,” said Anje Worrell, assistant alpine program director at SSWSC.

Bridgewater is a Colorado native and nationally ranked decathlete that began his coaching career at Steamboat in the late 90’s and is excited to be returning to the Yampa Valley. Having coached at Aspen, Eldora, and most recently for the Cayman Islands Olympic team in Vancouver this past season, Bridgewater is fully prepared to take on the role as head FIS/PG coach.

SSWSC hopes to build on their recent accomplishments, along with the addition of Bridgewater, there are many first year J2s coming into the program from both the Rocky and Central divisions. The club won the Surefoot Colorado Ski Cup Overall last season, giving them momentum coming into the 2010-11 season.

“We want to keep that moving and advancing as far we can…[Bridgewater] is going to be an important key element in that,” said Worrell.

Bridgewater summed up his expectations by saying, “I’m excited for the potential–I don’t know of another community that supports the sport of ski racing as much as Steamboat does…I’m excited to propel the kids to wherever they want to go.”  – Susan Theis
