St. Moritz: Paerson makes it two

By Published On: December 16th, 2007Comments Off on St. Moritz: Paerson makes it two

Sweden’s Anja Paerson knocked off her second win of the season in 24 hours on Sunday by edging Canada’s Emily Brydon by 0.04 and Austria's Renate Goetschl by 0.22 in the super G.
The Swede had a winning time of 1 minute, 15.06 seconds on the St. Moritz course. It was a tight race with the top 19 skiers within a second and top 32 within 2 seconds.
Second place marked Brydon's best career result. The Canadian previously had four third-place finishes spanning over the last seven years.
The victory gives Paerson her 37th career World Cup win and bumps her past Germany's Katja Seizinger as she becomes the sole proprietor of fourth place on the all-time victories list, led by Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell, who had 62. Paerson also takes over the lead in the overall standings kicking Nicole Hosp (sixth in race) off the top. Austria’s Marlies Schild (20th in race) drops from first to third. Paerson also takes over the super G standings.

A seven-time world champion, Paerson won both races by very small margins. On Saturday, she edged American Lindsey Vonn by 0.08 to post her first win of the season and her first in downhill since March 2006.
The top American finisher was Julia Mancuso who ties with Canada’s Britt Janyk in 10th with a time of 1:15.57. Vonn placed 12th. Libby Ludlow 24th, Stacey Cook 34th and Keely Kelleher 44th. Kaylin Richardson and Katie Hitchcock did not finish.
"This was a tight race today," said U.S. Head Coach Patrick Riml. "Jules and Lindsey were a half-second off the lead and they were 10th and 12th, but less than three-tenths away from the podium. That's how close the women's tour can be. It's tight."
"The conditions were perfect," he added. "Lindsey had a little problem at the top, went down on a hip but then she got it going. Jules lost a little bit at the bottom. I was pleased with Libby; this should help for her confidence some more."
The weekend's races — a downhill and a super-G — were moved to St. Moritz from Val d'Isere because of a lack of snow at the French resort.
