LIBEREC, Czech Republic — Gregor Schlierenzauer left nothing to chance on Saturday night in the final competition of the FIS Summer Grand Prix jumping series as the Austrian won the competition and the series title over Switzerland’s Simon Ammann.
Schlierenzauer, who entered the final weekend of competition trailing Ammann for the series lead, won the penultimate competition Friday night in Germany to pass Ammann and regain the lead. The series then shifted to Liberec, site of the upcoming Nordic World Championships, for the finale. Schlierenzauer posted the top jump in the first of two rounds to move closer to the title, then he wrapped it up by tying Ammann for the third-best jump in round two, trailing Japan’s Daiki Ito and Austria’s Martin Koch.
Schlierenzauer finished the night with jumps of 135.5 meters and 129.0 for a score of 274.1. Ito was second (128.5 and 133.5) with 272.6  and Koch third (131.5 and 131.5) with 272.4.
“I invested a lot of work in this summer series, and now I am looking forward to new challenges,” said Schlierenzauer, who won five of the 10 Summer Grand Prix events in 2008.
Ito achieved his third podium result after two second-place results during the last Grand Prix stop at in Hakuba, Japan. Ito rebounded from a fifth-place after the first jump and benefited from a change in the wind. Koch, meanwhile repeated his third-place result from a day earlier in Klingenthal, Germany.
In the final series standings, Schlierenzauer tallied 670 points to 617 for second-place Ammann. Michael Uhrmann held on to finish third with 346.
