World Cup Supply (WCS), Ski Racing Development (SRD), and HALTI USA announced Wednesday that Rowmark skier, Stephanie Schott of Salt Lake City, Utah, will be the recipient of the 2009 SRD/WCS/HALTI “Fast Skier” Junior Alpine Scholarship Fund award.

According to a release by the benefactors, Schott a first-year J2, “posted impressive results on the hill and exemplifies the personal characteristics that the award represents: strong academic achievement, extensive community involvement, and incredible drive as an athlete.” For demonstrating these attributes Schott will receive $1,000, a 2010 speed suit from HALTI USA and a helmet and goggle package from Shred, U.S. racer Ted Ligety’s company.

“Stephanie really exemplifies the intent of this award,” said Barry Levinson of SRD.  “Her results on the hill this year were especially strong when you consider that it was only five years ago when she actually started to ski race. She was the PNSA J3 Overall Champ in 2008 and is ranked in the top 30 in all disciplines for first-year J2’s for 2009.”

More than 100 racers from around the country submitted applications for the award intended to “recognize a J3/J2 racer who is well rounded athletically and academically and gives back to his or her community.”

“Stephanie made the Honor Roll, taking advanced classes this year at Rowmark Academy at Roland Hall, uses the money she earns from making and selling jewelry to purchase supplies for a school and orphanage in Mexico, volunteers at a camp for special needs children, mentors young racers and puts the maximum amount off effort into all aspects of her life.  Her accomplishments on the hill are incredible given her short time in the sport.” said Brad Williams of World Cup Supply. “We hope the Scholarship will gain momentum and additional support from the industry for next year.  Both HALTI, and Shred were late entries into the group and their support is great to have in our first year.”

“I’m really excited, I honestly didn’t expect to win this,” said Schott. “When we heard about the chance to apply it sounded like a great opportunity, so I’m really happy.”

She plans to use the scholarship money towards racing camp in South America this fall after recovering from a broken leg she suffered at her last race of the season.

Schott, who keeps her skills sharp on the soccer field during the dry months, hopes this award opens the doors to many more as she eyes a long future in ski racing. “My ultimate goal would be the U.S. Ski Team for sure, and the Olympics,” said Schott. “I definitely want to race in college, hopefully Dartmouth or somewhere like that.”
