Rebensburg suffers injury, will not start in Soelden
On Saturday, German skier Viktoria Rebensburg was caught on a gate in giant slalom training on the Pitztal Glacier in Austria and crashed, resulting in an undisplaced tibial fracture on her right leg. The German team doctor Manuel Koehne diagnosed the injury that afternoon in Munich.
“Surgery is not necessary, and we will treat it conservatively with immobilization,” Koehne said, which means a six-week break for Rebensburg.
Of course, this means that Rebensburg will not be able to start at the World Cup opener in Soelden later this month.
“Sadly, I won’t be able to compete in Soelden this year due to a leg injury, happened in training yesterday,” said Rebensburg in an Instagram post. “I will now put all my energy into rehab so I can join the race circuit as soon as possible!”
Her coach also weighed in.
“Viktoria’s injury is bitter, especially because she had very good form in training,” said women’s coach Markus Anwander.
Rebensburg is not the only athlete who recently suffered an injury in training. Italian Matteo Marsaglia’s season is over before it started. He was diagnosed with a torn ACL and meniscus injury after crashing during training in Chile. This injury will require surgery, taking him out of competition for the season.
