The sun and the crowds came out in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, for the first day of the Canadian Championships. Calgary’s Trevor Philp went into today’s giant slalom race as the defending champion.

After finishing the first run 0.25 seconds back from Dustin Cook’s winning run, Philp had some ground to make up in the second run. The course conditions held up and Philp made a move in the second run to claim the giant slalom Canadian Champion title for the second year in a row.

Cook slipped back one spot, finishing the day in second place. Joining Philp and Cook on the podium was Toronto’s Phil Brown, rounding out the podium in third.

This year’s teams were divided by province with clear rivalries right from the beginning. Each province had its fair share of big names filled with Canadian Alpine Ski Team members. Friends, family and the public crowded around the finish area, cheering on the athletes as they crossed the line.

Team Ontario came out as today’s victors with a powerhouse line-up that included Candace Crawford, Phil Brown, Ali Nullmeyer and Henry Luel. Both Crawford and Brown were part of the 2017 World Championship team and Ali Nullmeyer was part of the 2017 World Junior Championship team that took Team Event gold in Are, Sweden, making them favorites early on.

Tomorrow the ladies have their shot at the giant slalom Canadian Championship title.
