PANORAMA, B.C. — Kevin Francis won a super G and Max Hammer took a super combined race Monday as NorAm Cup racing resumed in the Canadian Rockies. U.S. men took four of the top five places in the SG and swept the combined podium at Panorama resort.
PANORAMA, B.C. — Kevin Francis won a super G and Max Hammer took a super combined race Monday as NorAm Cup racing resumed in the Canadian Rockies. U.S. men took four of the top five places in the SG and swept the combined podium at Panorama resort.
    Francis had a time of 1 minute, 8.90 seconds to win by more than a half-second over Canadian Louis-Pierre Helie in the first super G of the NorAm season. Chris Frank was third, Chris Beckmann fourth and Hammer fifth.
    Later, the athletes skied a run of slalom to create a super combined. Hammer won with a two-run (the super G and the one-run slalom) time of 1:52.90. Adam Cole, former U.S. Ski Team member and NCAA champion from the University of Denver, was second (1:53.31) and Andrew Phillips was third in 1:53.98.
    "It was a good day. It was cold but the snow was good and the course held up," said U.S. coach Tim LaMarche. "It was clear but this side of Panorama doesn't get sun until later in the winter, so there was flat light, but the boys kept their focus and skied well."
    The results came on the heels of a NorAm downhill victory by Jeremy Transue last week at Lake Louise in the second downhill of the season. The previous day, he had been the top American, finishing fifth in the opening DH.
    "That first downhill, for most of them, was their first race of the year. In that second one, they got their legs under them and they kept up the beat today. Kevin's fired up, Beckmann's coming on and they're all skiing pretty well," LaMarche said. "And I was really pleased with Max [Hammer], skiing to fifth in the downhill to put himself in position to win the combined. Good for him."
    The men's racing continues Tuesday with another super G. The women resume NorAm racing with their own super G Tuesday and then have a super combined Wednesday with a super G and slalom.
