North Americans dominate moguls World Cup season debut

American and Canadian moguls skiers had their way today (Dec. 10) at the season opening moguls World Cup event in Ruka, Finland,

Olympic gold medalist and defending freestyle overall champion, American Hannah Kearney took the women’s competition, a new superfinals format event, to record her 20th career World Cup win.

In the new format, athletes qualify down to the top 16. Out of those 16, the top four go into a superfinal for the trophies.

Kearney’s U.S. Ski Team teammate Eliza Outtrim took second place to record her second career World Cup podium.

“I didn’t exactly know what to expect from the new format, mainly because I had no concerns with the old format,” said Kearney. “In the back of my mind, I was trying to save something for the finals. My second run was the worst of the day. I had to salvage my bottom jump and disguised it well and stayed in front.”

The Czech Republic’s Nikola Sudova rounded out the podium in third.

American women took half of the top 12 spots as Heidi Kloser landed 6th followed by Heather McPhie in eighth and KC Oakley and Brittany Loweree in 11th and 12th, respectively.

On the men’s side, Canadian 19-year-old Mikael Kingsbury claimed his third World Cup victory. “It feels pretty crazy to wear the yellow bib,” said Kingsbury, “It feels like a dream come true. It’s not just being on the World Cup podium, it’s wearing the bib of the number one on the World Cup. I’ve always dreamed of that and now it happened. I’m not going to give it up without a fight.”

American Sho Kashima notched his career high in second place with a 21.71-point performance.

“It was kind of a surprise but a really nice finish. I didn’t go to Zermatt camp and competing from the C team and the way I skied last year, the confidence wasn’t there,” said Kashima. “But starting off this season healthy and being able to train this summer full on, hopefully this will be a great season.”

Fance’s Anthony Benna took the final podium spot in third.

Three more American men cracked the top 10 led by Jeremy Cota in sixth, Bradley Wilson in ninth at his World Cup debut and Patrick Deneen in ninth.

The World Cup moguls tour now takes an extended holiday break before picking back up in Lake Placid, NY Jan. 19.
