Estonia’s Andrus Veerpalu became a world champion today, winning the men’s 15 K classic cross country skiing race at the 2009 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic. It was the two-time Olympic gold medalist’s second world championship victory, the first came in 2001.

Lukas Bauer of the Czech Republic finished second in front of the home crowed followed by Finland’s Matti Heikkinen in third. American Kris Freeman was 17.7 seconds off the pace, finishing fourth to matched his result in the same event at the 2003 championships in Val di Fiemme, Italy.
