Nordic Combined: Pittin Makes History

Italian Alessandro Pittin won today’s (Jan. 13) World Cup nordic combined in Chaux-Neuve, France, making this Italy’s first ever World Cup victory in nordic combined. Today’s win moves Pittin into the third place position in the nordic combined overall World Cup standings.

“This is really nice for me, but also for Italy and my team. I think we deserved this victory, we have been working hard for the last two years and finally we won,” said Pittin.

France’s Jason Lamy Chappuis took second. He is still ranked number one in the men’s overall World Cup standings.

For the first time in his career, German Fabian Riessle made it onto the podium, taking third place. “I’m just happy about the race today; I almost can’t believe it happened.” Said Riessle.

On the last uphill of the new course, Pittin made an attack, and only Chappuis could follow. Riessle fought back in the downhill and was in a sprint duel for third spot. Crossing the finish line, Pittin was 4.4 seconds ahead of Chappuis and 6.0 seconds ahead of Riessle.

American Billy Demong also landed his season’s best individual result, finishing eighth.

Races will continue in Chaux-Neuve this weekend (Jan. 14-15) with two more individual Gundersen World Cups on Saturday and Sunday.
