Nordic Combined: Lamy Chappuis Tops Podium in Seefeld

After being part of yesterday’s team sprint win, France’s Jason Lamy Chappuis won his seventeenth individual nordic combined World Cup today (Dec. 17) in Seefeld, Austria. It was his second victory this season. Lamy Chappuis is now one victory behind Magnus Moan in the rankings of the most successful Nordic Combined athletes in history.

“It wasn’t an easy day with difficult  conditions in the morning,” said Lamy Chappuis. “But the weather is for all the same, and I’m not complaining.”

Japan’s Akito Watabe took second, the first podium finish of his career. Italian Alessandro Pittin finished third.

Plagued by heavy snowfall, the ski jumping portion of the competition saw challenges. Both rounds were won by Tino Edelmann. Lamy Chappuis was in  sixth, 35 seconds behind heading into the cross country leg.

During the cross-country race, the track was slow due to light snowfall. German Tino Edelmann was in the lead  during three of the four laps, but fell in the last round. The leading group was reduced and Lamy Chappuis, Watabe and Pittin, fought for the podium.

American Johnny Spillane also had his season best result today, finishing in twentieth. The challenging snow conditions caused the U.S. men to have difficulties sticking in the track during the ski jumping portion.

“We’re still dialing in equipment, which has been a challenge. He’s still testing bindings and skis and we’re falling a bit victim to not being in Europe all the time and having access, but hopefully we can test over Christmas and get him dialed in.” Said coach Dave Jarrett about Spillane.
