Nordic Combined: Demong Returns to the Podium

Japan’s Akito Watabe captured the victory in the Individual Gundersen competition at the World Cup Nordic Combined today (Feb. 5) in Val di Fiemme with a time of 28:27.8 minutes. Today’s win moves Watabe into the third place position overall in the Nordic Combined World Cup standings. Norway’s Mikko Kokslien took second.

It was a successful day for the Americans as well; Bill Demong finished third, making this his first podium place since his victory in Val di Fiemme in 2010.

“Today I was a little more patient and made it happen. At the end of the race I had enough energy left to keep pushing.” Said Demong. “The courses are super hard here. They are revamped. I don’t know if I ever skied a harder cross country course than today.”

U.S. teammate Bryon Fletcher matched his career best World Cup finish in seventh place and Taylor Fletcher earned his highest World Cup result, finishing fourteenth.

“They did a really good job pacing and not doing too much at the front to help other people.” said U.S. head nordic combined coach Dave Jarrett, “They were in control the whole time. We’ve been putting a lot of energy into getting it going now and hopefully we can keep it rolling.”

The World Cup Nordic Combined will continue in Almaty, Kazakhstan next weekend (Feb. 11-12).
