NorAm: Yurkiw wins GS at Mont Ste. Anne
Canada’s Larisa Yurkiw earned her third NorAm Cup victory of the season and fifth of her career Friday, topping the second and final giant slalom of the week in Mont Ste. Anne.

Yurkiw, who is currently leading the NorAm overall standings, finished in a two-run combined time of 2 minutes 9.22 seconds. American Keely Kelleher was second (2:09.60) with Marie-Pier Préfontaine, winner of Thursday’s race, finishing third (2:10.21). Canada’s Emilie Desforges and American Jenny Lathrop completed the top five.
“My last GS race [before Thursday] was at the beginning of the season so it takes a bit to get into things again. Today I was feeling more confident with what was going to work and what I could do,” said Yurkiw, who finished sixth in Thursday’s GS.
Yurkiw said leading after the first run is something she is not yet totally comfortable with, which made Friday’s win even more satisfying.
“Winning the first run presents one of the most difficult things for me in ski racing. There’s a lot of nerves to deal with in the second run. You know you want it but you also know that everyone is chasing after you for your spot,” said Yurkiw, who put down the second-fastest second run. “If you are second or third in the first run, most people are not looking at you that closely and there is not quite as much pressure.
“I didn’t lay down the fastest second run but it was enough. That was something that I was definitely battling with. It was good to have an opportunity like that and see how I respond.”
