Canada’s Dustin Cook won the first run of the men’s NorAm giant slalom race by a half second and held on for the win despite some trouble in the second run, scoring a minimum penalty six point result. Italy’s Luca De Aliprandini had to settle for runner-up position for the second day in a row while the U.S. Ski Team’s Brennan Rubie proved he is out for results in his return to the NorAm circuit by charging hard in the second run to finish on the podium in third.

Sporting bib 40, Cook hastily moved into the lead during the first run with a noteworthy attack from the back.

“Second run was a little more challenging; it was definitely rougher than first run. I went for it and made some mistakes, but I risked it and it worked out so I’m pumped,” said Cook. “Six points is always the goal, and to do it in that kind of field, it’s justification of the kind of training that I’ve been doing. It’s a monkey off my back to get that low result.”

Rubie was equally pleased with his podium result on the day coupled with a fourth the previous day. It proves to him that his work in the gym over the summer and the focus he had during early season skiing was worthwhile.

“The field in this NorAm was filled with multiple top 30 ranked skiers from all around the globe,” said Rubie. “So to finish four runs in a row, while skiing within a couple tenths of these proven World Cup racers, after coming back from an injury, is just as — if not more rewarding — than the result I had last year. It was also my first finish to score under 10 points on the new radius GS ski.”

Warner Nickerson was the fastest American in the first run finishing third, but a slight mistake at the top of the course along with a few grinded arcs on the turnier second run set cost him precious time. He was 24th on the second run to finish 14th overall. The discrepancies in Nickerson’s times put him in good company with the other first run leaders. Not a single racer in the top 10 during the first run was able to produce a result higher than 13th in the second.

The U.S. Ski Team’s Michael Ankeny tied for eighth with Alpine Canada’s Trevor Philp. American Jeremy Elliot, a student at the University of Utah who now skis for Aspen-based Team Geronimo after extinguishing his NCAA eligibility, had the fastest second run time and squeezed just inside the top 10. NorAm racing continues at Loveland on Monday (Nov. 25) and Tuesday (Nov. 26) with the men’s slalom races.
