The University of New Mexico won the 2009 RMISA Championship in Truckee, Cali. Saturday. The Lobos sealed the deal with three top-five finishes in the in the men’s 15k freestyle cross country race. The event doubled as the NCAA Western Regionals.

The win marks the first time the Lobos have won the event since 1992 and their first team win since the 2004 NCAA Championships. The Lobos finished with 565 points and won by 26 points over Colorado in second.

UNM’s Simon Reissmann’s win in the men’s freestyle race gave the school five wins out of eight races at the championship. The Lobos finished 1-3-5 in the race to earn 84 points and secure the championship.

Colorado filled the gaps, finishing 2-4-6 and second in the overall championship. Matt Gelso climbed on the podium in second.

Denver’s Antje Maempel won the women’s race followed by teammate Annelise Bailly in second. UNM’s Polina Ermoshina finishing third. CU’s Alexa Turzian and Maria Grevsgaard finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Denver won the women’s team event with 74 points followed by Nevada in second with 72 points. Colorado and Montana State tied for third with 62 points apiece.

The Wolfpack took third in the event with 485 points, followed by Denver in fourth with 483 points. Alaska Anchorage took home fifth with 457 points while Utah was just 13 behind the Seawolves at 444 points.

The team’s now head to the 2009 NCAA Championships, held March 11-14 in Sunday River (alpine) and Black Mountain (nordic), Maine.
