THE NORTHERN MICHIGAN
women swept the podium for the second time at the NCAA Championships on Friday as Lindsey Weier won the 15 kilometer classic race ahead of Lindsay Williams and Morgan Smyth.
Weier, third in the freestyle race two days ago at New Hampshire’s Jackson Cross-Country Center, beat freestyle champ Williams by 1 second Friday, clocking 47 minutes, 21 seconds with the temperature hovering around zero degrees Fahrenheit. Smyth finished in 48:11.4 in third place, edging Colorado’s Maria Grevsgaard by less than a second (48:12.2). Aurelia Korthauer of Alaska-Fairbanks finished fifth in 49:19.
In the men’s 20 km classic, Utah’s Snorri Einarsson turned away Denver’s Rene Reisshauer by 2.1 seconds to win the title, clocking 55:06.0 to Reisshauer’s 55:08.1. Marius Korthauer of Alaska-Fairbanks finished third in 55:15.9, his second consecutive top-three finish in classic at NCAAs.
Dartmouth’s Ben True finished fourth in 55:19.8, with Matt Gelso of Colorado fifth in 55:41.6. Defending NCAA classic champ John Stene of Denver was sixth in 55:50.7.
The fourth-place finish was a career best for True, who finished fifth in last year’s 10 km classical. “It feels good,” True said. “It would have been nice to be able to get on the podium, but those three guys are very strong skiers, and so it was nice to be able to ski up with them.”
With only the men and women’s slalom remaining, Dartmouth leads the team race with 511 points, with Denver second at 473. Defending champ Colorado sits third with 429 and Utah is fourth with 426. If Dartmouth holds on Saturday, it would become the first Eastern school to win an NCAA title since 1994.
“It means I’m not going to sleep very well tonight," said Cami Thompson, the women's cross-country coach and director of skiing at Dartmouth.
