THE BIG GREEN
of Dartmouth completed an unbeaten season on the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association carnival circuit Saturday, capturing the EISA Championship at the Middlebury Winter Carnival.
The Big Green used another commanding performance by its cross-country team to pull away from archrivals Vermont and Middlebury for the team crown, more than doubling their 30 point first-day lead to win going away. Dartmouth totaled 928.5 points to Vermont’s 858 and
Middlebury’s 833. With the win, Dartmouth finishes the EISA circuit with a flawless 6-0 record.
At the Rikert Ski Touring Center Saturday, Big Green senior Mike Sinnott of Sun Valley, Idaho, won his EISA-leading ninth race of the season, taking the men’s 20-kilometer classical technique race in 57:10.0. Vermont’s Juergen Uhl was second, just two seconds back in 57:12.2. Uhl was hounded by three more Big Green skiers — junior Ben True, sophomore Glenn Randall and junior Ben Koons in third through fifth places.
In the women’s 15 km classical, Vermont’s Carina Hamel broke the Big Green logjam, taking the race in 51:56.5. She was followed by four Dartmouth women in the top 10: junior Elsa Sargent in second place, junior Susan Dunklee in third, senior captain Sara Studebaker in fourth and sophomore Hannah Dreissigacker in sixth.
At the Middlebury Snow Bowl, the Big Green placed four racers in the top 12 of the women’s giant slalom and three in the top 10 of the men’s GS to seal the team win. New Hampshire’s Veronique Archambault-Leger won the women’s race in 2:05.57, ahead of Dartmouth junior Michelanne Shields. Middlebury’s Lindsay Brush was third; Dartmouth senior Lindsay Mann, who won Friday’s slalom race, was seventh. Senior co-captain Alex Fucigna was 11th and freshman Hayley Jones was 12th.
In the men’s race, Middlebury’s Andrew Wagner won for the home team in 2:00.34. Williams’ Eric Mann was second and Dartmouth senior Evan Weiss was third. Dartmouth junior David Chodounsky finished fifth; junior Alex Felix was seventh.
Next up for the Big Green is the NCAA Championships March 7-10, hosted by the University of New Hampshire at Bartlett, New Hampshire.
