NCAA: Lobos lead in RMISA Championships

The University of New Mexico Lobos took the lead on the first day of the 2009 RMISA Championships Thursday at Mt. Rose Ski Resort near Reno, Nevada. The championships will also act as the NCAA Western Regionals.

After the first two races (men’s and women’s slaloms) the Lobos racked up 151 points. Host Nevada stands in second place with 141 points. Denver is 24 points off the pace in third.

UNM’s Petter Brenna won the men’s slalom with a time of 1:46.16. It was Brenna’s third slalom victory of the season. The home team owned the remainder of the podium with Nevada’s Martin Harris and Gregory Berger claiming second and third, respectively.

New Mexico’s Estelle Pecherand-Charmet dominated the women’s slalom by a more than two-second margin. Denver’s Molly Ryan finished second while Nevada’s Katie Lyons rounded out the podium in third.

The alpine action at Mt. Rose continues today with men’s and women’s giant slalom races. The nordic competition will get kick off with a classic race at the Auburn Ski Club in Truckee, Calif.
