The 2009 NCAA Championships hosted by Bates College wrapped up today with men’s and women’s cross country races as four western teams shocking the field at the top. 

University of Denver led the western push with 659 points. The silver-medal race came down to half a point with the advantage going to the University of Colorado with 602.5. The University of New Mexico rounded out the podium with 602.

DU got a big push from cross country skier Antje Maempel as she won a women’s 15K race a half a second ahead of University of Colorado skier Alexa Turzia in second place. Dartmouth’s Rosie Brennan pulled in the bronze six seconds off the pace. Anneelise Bailly, another DU athlete, gave her school some additional points in fourth place.

On the men’s side, the University of Colorado’s Vegard Kjoelhamar took the victory, beating University of Alaska Anchorage skiers Lex Treinen and Raphael Wunderle by 20 seconds.

The top eastern school was the University of Vermont with 537 points.
