A decision is expected Sunday from the International Ski Federation on when and where two women's World Cup events will be rescheduled after Saturday's cancellation of the early December stop in St. Moritz, Switzerland, due to a lack of snow and a forecast of warm weather. It marked the first time since 1999 that races had to be canceled in advance at St. Moritz.
A downhill and a super combined were scheduled to be held from Dec. 9-10 at St. Moritz.
Women's World Cup Race Director Atle Skaardal said Saturday night that the FIS is "still working very hard with USSA, Media Partners and Aspen to try to find a solution [in Aspen] for a super-combined the week after Lake Louise."
Skaardal added that he still must determine the number of racers who are scheduled to leave Aspen on Monday after this weekend's technical events for next weekend's two downhills and a super G in Lake Louise, Canada. Those speed racers would then have to return to Colorado for the super-combined. Skaardal said the FIS has to make a decision on a revised race schedule on Sunday to accomodate travel plans.
"Hopefully we can confirm something [Sunday]," he said.
Skaardal also said that by Wednesday a decision likely will be made on whether to cancel men's downhill and super-combined events scheduled for Dec. 9-10 in Val d'Isere, France, also due to warm weather and lack of snow. The FIS is in talks with organizers at Beaver Creek, Colorado, which hosts men's races next week.
