KRAKOW, Poland — Czech ski jumper Jan Mazoch is walking again and has a ''realistic chance'' of returning to the sport after suffering critical injuries in a crash, doctors said Monday.
Mazoch, 21, sustained brain injuries when he crashed during a World Cup meet Jan. 20 in Zakopane, Poland. He was kept in a medically induced coma for several days to control the swelling on his brain.
Marek Moskala, the Krakow hospital director, said Mazoch's condition has improved considerably and he would likely be transfered Wednesday to a Czech hospital to continue his recovery.
''He has a realistic chance of returning to ski jumping,'' Moskala said at a news conference. ''He wants that himself.''
Mazoch is walking again with the support of his nurses, Moskala said.
Later Monday, prosecutors in Zakopane said they were dropping an investigation into the accident after determining that organizers didn't violate security regulations. Prosecutors said wind speed at the time was within the allowed limit.
