Jen Higgins and Megan Thayer have kicked it up a notch to challenge the men of the New York Masters.
Mark Sertl and Pepi Neubauer, quick enough to take any Masters field across the country, escaped being “girled” in the first GS at Bristol. Higgins took out Neubauer by almost a second on the first run but Neubauer found another gear for the second run, saving his reputation on his own race hill. The course was a tight and technical set that covered the full length of the Comet race trail. This left many racers with nothing in the tank for the final pitch, the longest and toughest GS hill in New York, and many say in the East.
The young women of Masters racing in New York appear to be as tough as they come. Higgins was third and Thayer held on for fifth overall in the men’s race. Tyler Sprockhoff, Wade Sarkis and Bob Andree rounded out the top five for the men. Third for the women was Caralina Higgins.
Race No. 2 turned into a one-run event and it was an invigorated Neubauer taking the honors over Sertl, with 21-one year old Thayer breathing down their necks less than a second behind both men. Bob Andree held onto third overall for the men, narrowly holding off Tyler Sprockhoff and Brian Blew both about a half second behind. Jen Higgins failed to finish, and it was Caralina Higgins grabbing second with Stenci Wegman taking third overall for the women.
This coming weekend, Jan 11-13, the New York Masters head to central New York areas Song, Toggenburg and Labrador for doubleheaders in super G, slalom and GS.
