MARIBOR, Slovenia — Austria’s Elisabeth Goergl earned the first win of her World Cup career Saturday and ended Denise Karbon’s stranglehold on the GS circuit so far this season.
The 26-year-old Goergl led Italy’s Manuela Moelgg by 0.40 seconds after the first run down a soft Mariborski course that gave many of the race favorites troubles. Goergl, who has two podium finishes in giant slalom this season— second in Panorama, Canada, in November and third at Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic, last week — posted the fourth-fastest time in the second run and increased her lead to 0.49 seconds over Moelgg in the final results. Karbon, winner of the first four giant slalom events on the World Cup this season, rallied from sixth place in the opening run to finish third, 1.72 seconds back of Goergl in 2:40.21.

Goergl posted a two-run combined effort of 2 minutes, 38.49 seconds, with Moelgg crossing in 2:38.98 in second. Karbon, winner of the first four giant slalom events on the World Cup this season and was bidding to tie the best-ever start by a woman, rallied from sixth place in the opening run to finish third, 1.72 seconds back of Goergl in 2:40.21.
''Since my first podium finish in Bormio back in 2003, I have been dreaming about winning. This is so great, it was worthwhile waiting for,'' Goergl said.
Karbon wasn't down despite not being able to match Vreni Schneider's five straight GS wins to start the 1989 season. Anja Paerson also won five straight GS events in 2004, but not to start the season.
''I am happy with this result. I had a consistent second run so that was OK for me,'' Karbon said.
Rounding out the top five were Kathrin Hoelzl of Germany in fourth (2:40.69) and Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen fifth (2:40.74).
Lindsey Vonn led the United States with a 13th-place finish Saturday. Vonn posted the third-fastest second run time to move up from 16th position after the opener. Julia Mancuso finished 20th despite nearly missing a gate in the first run.
“I just lost balance at one point, but otherwise things were going well for me,” Mancuso said.
"There were some huge gaps in the times because of the conditions," U.S. head coach Patrick Riml said. "Only two girls from outside the first 30 starters made it into the second run. It was just a very difficult race, so crazy because of the weather. The snow was soft, the light was not good and it was so challenging. Lindsey was attacking on her second run and it's good to see her confidence growing in GS."
A warm front, which turned conditions upside down, rolled through the region during the night – as predicted, Riml said.
"Yesterday, the race course was so solid, even icy, and it got warm during the night – no rain, just warm, and everything softened. If the organizers hadn't done such a good job last week in preparing the course, we couldn't have held this race today," he said.
World Cup overall standings leader Nicole Hosp finished sixth, just ahead of France’s Ingrid Jacquemod, who laid down the fastest second-run time and moved up from 13th place after the opening run.
