The World Cup comeback queen will face another setback at the start of the 2015-16 season, as Lindsey Vonn reported on her Facebook page that she injured her ankle during training in New Zealand where she has been skiing since the beginning of the month. She will return home instead of finishing out the training camp.

“I unfortunately crashed today while training in New Zealand. I have a small fracture in my ankle and have to head back to the [U.S.] now. I will let you know when I have more info.,” Vonn posted.

The 30-year-old returned to competition in 2015 after missing nearly two seasons due to a severe knee injury to claim the World Cup downhill and super G globes. Showing solid form in GS at the World Cup Finals in Meribel, France where she finished fifth, Vonn was hoping to once again vie for the overall title in the 2015-16 season with quality preparation in giant slalom.

“I think if I get a good preparation period for next year I should be OK and hopefully can challenge these other girls and get some good points for the overall,” Vonn said in March.

As part of her preparation, she foreran at the New Zealand national championships GS race on Sunday.

The World Cup season kicks off on Oct. 24 with a GS race in Soelden, Austria. Vonn’s prognosis and potential return to snow are yet to be announced.
