LIBEREC, Czech Republic — For the second time in three days, a nordic combined World Cup sprint was canceled Sunday because of gusting, strong winds at the 2009 FIS Nordic World Championships venue. If the events are not rescheduled, six combined competitions remain with Bill Demong second in the overall points behind German Ronny Ackermann.
"We spent a lot of time at the jump hill this weekend and didn't get much accomplished," Head Coach Lasse Ottesen said. "That's not the organizers' fault, but they may want to reconsider some of the timing of events at Worlds. They may want to think about nighttime competitions, or at least late day when the winds aren't that bad."
While the weekend meant two lost opportunities for Demong to gain on Ackermann, it also gave Johnny Spillane a chance to get over a cold, which hit him at midweek, Ottesen said. "It was good Johnny had a chance to take it easy, so now he and Billy will be ready to keep rolling next weekend in Zakopane."
The World Cup tour's next stop is on the weekend in Zakopane, Poland, where a sprint and mass start are scheduled.
