LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland — Italy’s Massimiliano Blardone edged Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal by .01 seconds in the first run of giant slalom Saturday at World Cup Finals, while World Cup points leader Benni Raich of Austria skied out.
Bode Miller was seventh and Ted Ligety 12th for the Americans.
“I’m pleased with my run. I am. The board speaks for itself. I’m pleased with my run,” Svindal said.
Svindal trails Raich by just three points in the battle for the overall championship, though Raich is stronger in slalom, which concludes the season Sunday.
Raich entered the day on a two-race GS win streak (Adelboden, Kranjska Gora) and held a three-point lead over Svindal for the GS title. Blardone saty third in the GS points but is capable of wining the overall with a solid second run.
“I took a lot of risk the whole course down,” Raich said. “The advantage is now for Aksel. But there is still a chance and we will see.”
