Renate Goetschl reinstated her authority over the Lake Louise race hill by putting down a monster super G run. Goetschl won in 1 minute, 20.86 seconds and was followed by Lindsey Kildow of the United States, .87 back.
Goetschl, a veteran with a World Cup résumé dating back to 1993, and a two-time super G champion, won her third super G at Lake Louise. Kildow, however, is pressing Goetschl for the Queen of Lake Louise crown. She dominated the two downhills, winning Saturday and placing second Friday behind Germany’s Maria Riesch.
LAKE LOUISE, Alberta, Canada — Renate Goetschl reinstated her authority over the Lake Louise race hill by putting down a monster super G run.
Canadian Kelly VanderBeek scored her first podium, placing third. VanderBeek became the first Canadian woman to reach the Lake Louise podium since racing began there in 1989.
“This is my first podium in Canada, I think I am going to cry! I knew it was coming, I have learned the value of a hundredth of a second,” VanderBeek said. Click here to see a post race video interview with Kelly.
Historically, Melaine Turgeon finished fifth in the super G at Lake Louise in 1999, Canada’s previous best SG result in Lake Louise. Kerrin Lee-Gartner finished second in a super G in Panorama in 1992.
VanderBeek’s impressive result Sunday led a tremendous team performance as well, as four Canadians placed in the top 11.
Genevieve Simard was just behind VanderBeek in fifth while Emily Brydon was eighth and Britt Janyk 11th on the day her brother, Michael, podiumed in Beaver Creek.
“We made a bet to try to get four girls in the top 10. We just missed it but I think as a nation it was great day and Kelly deserves her podium, she’s been fourth too many times,” Simard said.
“With 2010 coming the whole nation is paying attention now and we’re really excited,” VanderBeek added. “We go out there with so much passion and are really competitive. When I podium or Gen or Emily or one of the men podium, it doesn’t matter, it’s a Canadian on the podium. We are going out there with our whole heart.”
The podium capped a stellar week for Kildow.
“Yeah, there’s a comfort zone for me,” said Kildow, who has won a downhill at Lake Louise each of the last three seasons. Sunday’s podium was her second World Cup super G top three in the Canadian Rockies. “I did the same thing as [Saturday when she won] and just let my skis run. I’m confident here and I just didn’t hold back.
Temperatures climbed to 14 Fahrenheit (minus-10 Celsius) but a wind made it feel colder on the 1.1-mile (1.8-kilometer) course, about half the length of the downhill route.
“It was really flat light, and there was some pretty funky stuff with the wind and I lost some time on the top, but I think I skied well the rest of the way,” Kildow said. “It was cloudy and snowing and lots of winds — pretty similar to Friday … and any time you’re on the podium in conditions like this, it’s good and you should be happy … and I am.”
Other Americans were Kirsten Clark in 19th, Libby Ludlow in 27th, Stacey Cook in 29th, Julia Mancuso in 35th and Chelsea Marshall in 44th.
The women have a couple of days down time as International Ski Federation work on scheduling of upcoming races in snow-starved Europe. Races at St. Moritz, Switzerland, scheduled for next week have been canceled but organizers are hopeful of hosting the downhill and super G set for Dec. 16-17 in Val d’Isere, France, where the men’s races — planned for next weekend — have been scrubbed because of poor snow.
