Justyna Kowalczyk has swept the first three races of the nine race Tour de Ski.

The Polish cross country star claimed the third race Saturday (Jan. 31) to start her New Years celebration off on the right foot, taking a sprint in Oberstdorf, Germany’s Erdinger Arena. She won the qualifier and then out-charged Norway’s Marit Bjoergen to the finish.

It was an all Russian day on the men’s side with Nikita Kriukov in first, Alexey Petukhov in second and Nikolay Morilov third.

Kowalczyk now has a 22.2 second margin over Bjoergen in the tour standings. American Kikkan Randall, celebrating her birthday as well as the New Year, finished ninth after a fall and moved to fifth in the Tour standings 1:40.8 back of the Pole. Norway’s Petter Northug, also a crash victim in the finals,  was sixth in the race, but holds the tour lead by 4.8 seconds over Dario Cologna of Switzerland. Canada’s Devon Kershaw power to fourth in the standings 36.7 seconds behind Northug.

“It’s been three amazing days for me,” said Kowalczyk, “and this was really a great way of ending the year 2011.” She said her goal is to win the World Cup at Szklarska Poreba in February. “This will be the first World Cup (in Poland) in history.”

Kruikov said the showing was important for his Russian team. “It is very good for the Russian team that we eere this strong today, especially for our sprint team. We had difficult conditions yesterday; today we had an easier day.”

Northug said he was trying to attack when he fell. “I tried to attack on the last hill and as the track was fairly slippery, I’m not quite sure what exactly happened, but I fell.”

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
