Knee injury threatens season for Olympic slalom medalist Reinfried Herbst{mosimage}INNSBRUCK, Austria — Olympic slalom silver medalist Reinfried Herbst may miss the upcoming World Cup season after undergoing surgery on an injured knee.

The 27-year-old Austrian damaged a ligament and tore cartilage in his left knee while playing in a charity soccer game in Zell am See, he said on his Web site.

Herbst had an operation Wedneday at the University Clinic in Innsbruck, and will be sidelined for at least six months.

The World Cup season opens on Oct. 28 in Soelden, Austria. Depending on his rehabilitation, he could be back on the circuit in February.

Herbst finished second behind Austria’s Benjamin Raich in the slalom at the Torino Olympics in February. He finished eighth in the 2006 World Cup slalom standings.
