Prince Hubertus von Hohenlohe of Mexico broke his leg Sunday in a men's World Cup slalom.

KITZBÜHEL, Austria — Prince Hubertus von Hohenlohe of Mexico broke his leg Sunday in a men's World Cup slalom.
Von Hohenlohe, who will turn 48 next week, straddled a gate and fell in the opening leg of the slalom. He was airlifted to a hospital in nearby Sankt Johann and had surgery on his lower leg, organizers said.
The injury means Von Hohenlohe won't get to compete in a record 13th World Championships. Von Hohenlohe's first World Championships were in Schladming, Austria, in 1982.
He has also competed in four Winter Olympics, starting at the Sarajevo Games, where he finished 36th in the downhill.
Von Hohenlohe was prevented from competing at the 2006 Torino Olympics because he was the only Mexican to qualify and the Mexican Olympic Committee decided against sending him as a one-man team.
An heir of Germany's Von Hohenlohe family, he was born in Mexico City and has a Mexican passport. He is the son of Alfonso von Hohenlohe and Ira Furstenberg, a former actress and a well-known socialite.
Von Hohenlohe learned to ski by accompanying his parents on vacations to fashionable European resorts.
