Kikkan Randall wins third straight Cup sprint

American Kikkan Randall collected the first U.S. World Cup cross country victory of the season today (Dec. 3) by outsprinting Russian Natalia Vedeeva to the finish in the Dusseldorf sprint through the city streets along the Rhine. It was Randall’s fourth career win and she grabbed the lead of the World Cup sprint standings. She sits fifth overall.

After a slow start in the sprint final Randall had to power through the pack and past the Russian for the win, her third straight sprint win going back to last season.

Coach Chris Grover clarified the effort, saying “She was so determined out there. Dusseldorf is such a short sprint for women (circa 900 meters and 1:45) that you can’t afford to be in the back in your heat. She did not exactly have the start that she wanted in the finals and she absolutely fought her way up to second place by the back side of the course (coming off of “Mt. Dusseldorf”) and eventually to the win in the finish stretch.”

“There was a lot of moving around out there today,” Randall said. “I was glad I had a little left in my legs at the end. It was so loud out there I couldn’t even hear myself breathing hard. It was really fun here today.”

Andy Newell qualified 14th but missed out on moving out of the first heat by a tenth of a second after breaking a pole in the quarter final.
