Guay tops training at Garmisch

Erik Guay said he hoped he wasn’t “a little too early” after recording the fastest time in the second of two training runs for a World Cup downhill at Garmisch-Partenkirchen. He is a former winner on the Kandahar 2 track and last season won the World Championship downhill on an adjoining track that did not have enough snow cover for the race.

Frenchman Adrien Theaux was second fastest and Kitzbuehel winner Didier Cuche third. Bode Miller was ninth.

Said Guay, “Its a good track for me, I hit everything I wanted to and I was on all the right lines. I didn’t do anything spectacular skiing-wise, but I didn’t botch any of the turns and it translated into a good run.”

After training in the sun on a bumpy and inconsistent track Thursday, Today’s run (Jan 27) was tempered by clouds and overcast. Temperatures plummeted overnight, but warmed as the day progressed.

“It’s better than yesterday, not as soft.” said local racer Stephan Keppler (18th). He did allow the track was still bumpy.

American Erik Fisher finished between two teammates – Wiley Maple and Travis Ganong – in 40th.

He noted the overcast sky changes little about the course. “Having light doesn’t really matter. If it’s sunny we’re in the shadows and if it’s cloudy then there’s flat light. Either way this hill here is dark. You just have to trust yourself and go for it.”

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
