CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland — Austrian star Renate Goetschl hinted that she might retire after this season. Goetschl, who won the overall World Cup trophy in 2000 and has 24 downhill wins to her credit, will turn 33 next August.
“I can’t expect to be undecided about the future,” Goetschl said, “If I am having fun then perhaps, maybe [I will ski].”
Goetschl, who is known affectionately as the “queen of speed” as virtually all of her wins have been in downhill and super G, cited her health as an important factor. Ironically, her maiden win was in slalom. In her first World Cup start in Hafjell, Norway, Goetschl stunned the slalom field when she knocked off the best gate skiers to inaugurate what has been a stunning career.
“After the season I want to play tennis,” said Goetschl pointing out that rehabbing was no fun.
She went on to say that she had missed training this summer because she was in the clinic recovering from surgery. “I have had 11 surgeries,” she said. “It's enough.”

Swiss Borghi retires
Veteran Swiss racer Catherine Borghi raced her last downhill in Crans Montana and was carried in a sedan chair around the finish area by her teammates. The 32-year-old was a journeyman World Cup racer for the Swiss. Her best two results were both fourth-place downhill finishes.
She skied in two Olympics and World Championships, posting her best result at the Salt Lake games, an eighth in the combined.
