Geiger ends French junior win streak

By Published On: February 1st, 2010Comments Off on Geiger ends French junior win streak

GeigerThe French continue to control the World Junior Ski Championships they are hosting with Maxence Muzaton taking the third straight race in winning the men’s super G Monday (Feb. 1) at Megeve. It wasn’t until the women’s night slalom that Christina Geiger ended the streak like a woman among girls.

Espen Lysdahl of Norway added his second medal in two races adding silver to the bronze from the opening GS with Italian Mattia Casse claiming the SG bronze. Swiss Jonas Fravi was fourth and Alexis Pinturault gave the French two in the top five, all within a second of Muzaton.

Wiley Maple was the top American in the field finishing in 14th place. Nick Daniels added a creditable 18th. A group of U.S. skiers finished down the order with Jared Goldberg, Colby Granstrom and Michael Ankeny clustered in spots 38, 39 and 41 respectively. Will Gregorak did not finish.

Philip Brown led the Canadian team for the second straight day, finishing in 22nd. Trevor Philp was 34th, Erik Read 44th, Andy Trow 54th, Sasha Zaitsoff 58th with Kelby Halbert being disqualified.

The women contested a night slalom at nearby Les Planards with German World Cup skier Christina Geiger winning by more than a second and ending the French win streak in no uncertain terms. While Mona Loeseth got the silver medal and Sweden’s Sara Hector the bronze, the top French skier was Jeromine Geroudet in 19th place.

Julia Ford led the U.S. squad in 25th place, five and a half seconds off the pace and she was easily the class of the team. Devin Delaney finished in 48th.  Abbi Fucigna was a second run DNF.

Canadian Erin Mielzynski had a strong showing in seventh. She was three seconds behind Geiger but .79 off the podium. Brittany Phelan skied to 42nd, Victoria Stevens to 45th, Julia Roth to 52nd and Stephanie Irwin failed to finish.

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
