French lead way in Wengen training

The French haven’t won the Wengen downhill since Henri Duvillard in 1970, and they haven’t won it this year yet, either. But in the second training run, on a surprisingly nice day, Frenchmen Johan Clarey and Adrien Theaux went one-two down the full length of the legendary Lauberhorn. Defending Cup downhill champ Klaus Kroell finished .11 back in third and current standings leader Aksel Lund Svindal was fourth .19 back. It’s going to be an interesting race.

Officials were worried about a snow storm, and while it did snow overnight, by inspection the skies cleared and skiers took to the full length of the course, resulting in times over 2 minutes, 30 seconds. (Fastest on the day was 2:34.62). Fresh snow was cleaned off the track and the base was exposed.  “The slope is really good,” said Theaux. It feels as if last nights snowfall didn’t impact the base and that made it fun to ski.”

Also significant was fourth place finisher Max Franz, scheduled for his first competition since a crash at Beaver Creek in early December. Italians had Beaver Creek winner Christof Innerhofer and Bormio winner Dominik Paris six and seven respectively.

The home standing Swiss, with last season’s Lauberhorn winner Beat Feuz on site but in street clothes, were led by Patrick Kueng in 12th. Erik Guay was top Canadian in 14th and the Americans were led by Marco Sullivan in 25th place.

About the Author: Hank McKee

In memoriam: The veteran of the staff, McKee started with Ski Racing in 1980. Over the seasons, he covered virtually every aspect of the sport, from the pro tours to junior racing, freestyle and World Cup alpine competition. He wrote the first national stories for many U.S. team stars, and was still around to report on their retirements. “Longevity has its rewards,” he said, “but it’s a slow process.”
