THE FRENCH National Olympic Committee plans to submit a candidate city for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games, the president of the committee announced late last week.
Henri Serandour said three cities have apparently expressed interest: Annecy, Nice and Grenoble, the latter having hosted the Games in 1968. The chosen candidate is expected to be announced in March.
France has hosted the Winter Games three times, including the first edition in 1924 in Chamonix. Albertville hosted in 1992.
Three cities in Norway, Santiago in Chile, Munich and Pyeongchang, South Korea, have officially entered the race for the 2018 bid, although a report issued recently on the bid put forth by Tromsoe, Norway, listed that it will cost twice as much as previously estimated and that support among residents is “lukewarm, at best” according to Norway’s Aftenposten newspaper.
Two cities in the United States—Denver, Colorado, and Reno, Nevada—have expressed interest in hosting the 2018 Games.
The International Olympic Committee will begin the application process for 2018 after the campaign for the 2016 Summer Olympics ends next year. The IOC vote for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games is set for 2011 in Durban, South Africa.
