The start of August marked the beginning of the Southern Hemisphere 2014-15 FIS season as women contested a slalom in Cardrona, New Zealand and both genders took on giant slalom courses in El Colorado, Chile.

Scottish skier Charlie Guest, who races under the banner of Great Britain, claimed the women’s victory in New Zealand. The 20-year-old bested a field including her teammates Rachelle Rogers and Darcie Mead by a head-turning 4.26 seconds. Austria’s Denise Widner finished second and Rogers third. The only North Americans to complete the race were Bates College’s Sierra Ryder in 14th and Rowmark’s Lexi Calcagni in 18th.

“It’s a great feeling to have the first race in the bag,” said Guest. “My skiing today was not exactly ideal in the first run. I made a couple of mistakes and didn’t really find much of a rhythm in the course. … Summer prep has been going really well with the Scottish Institute, and I’ve made some real improvements with my cardio work whilst learning a lot about myself on the strength side of things. I’m really looking forward to the rest of our camp down here in New Zealand and of course final preparations back home before the Northern Hemisphere season.”

The men’s slalom in Cardrona scheduled for Aug. 2 was cancelled and the giant slalom events originally scheduled for July 31 were postponed to Aug. 3. New Zealand has faced challenging conditions this year with unseasonably warm temperatures and wet weather during the race series.

In Chile, local brothers Henrik and Sven Von Appen went 1-2 in the men’s GS on Aug. 2. Henrik, who finished the Sochi Olympic super-G and super combined in 32nd, also claimed the opening GS win of the season on Friday and was able to lower his points back to 32, where they were on the final list from last season. Younger brother Sven, who skis for Burke Mountain Academy, scored a career-best 43 with his finish just over a half-second behind Henrik.

Chilean Javiera Cea won the women’s GS race on Friday and Canadian Antoinette Tansley of Grouse Mountain Tyee Ski Club claimed the victory on Saturday. Races continue in New Zealand, Australia, Chile, and Argentina through mid-September.
