Anna FenningerIt’s been more than a month since the women of the World Cup clicked into their downhill skis in Lake Louise but the rust came out quickly today (Jan. 5) in Bad Kleinkirchheim, Austria at the first training run ahead of Saturday’s race.

Austrian Anna Fenninger, hot off of her first career World Cup win last week in the Lienz GS, lead the way today with a time of one minute, 51.27 seconds.

Spain’s Carolina Ruiz Castillo followed, 0.09 seconds behind on the thinly covered, bumpy track. Norwegian Lotte Smiseth Sejersted followed with the third-fastest time.

American Lindsey Vonn, winner of both downhills and both super G races to be held thus far this season, came in with the 11th-fastest time.

“I was a little conservative, taking a little bit of wider line than I should have to get back in the feeling of downhill. I haven’t skied downhill since Lake Louise, so it’s been a while,” Vonn told Fisalpine.com. “All in all, it was a good run.”

U.S. teammate Stacey Cook was not far behind Vonn in 14th followed by Alice McKennis in 26th and Leanne Smith in 29th. Julia Mancuso skied to 41st today on the track that many of the current U.S. Team is unfamiliar with.

The women’s World Cup tour last stopped in Bad Kleinkirchheim in 2006, a contest dominated by now retired Croatian great Janica Kostelic, who won both a downhill and a Super G on her way to picking up her last overall title. 

American Laurenne Ross took it easy in her first outing back from a scary crash in Lake Louise in which she sustained several deep cuts to her face. She finished 67th today. 

There will be a second training run tomorrow with racing kicking off Saturday. A Super G will follow Sunday.
