Evers takes on new role as men’s Swiss speed coach
Former U.S. Ski Team and Liechtenstein coach Andreas Evers has been hired by the Swiss Ski Federation as a men’s speed coach. He is tasked with developing and implementing a more individualized plan for the speed group in the coming season.
Evers, a 49-year-old Austrian, has spent the last two years working for the Liechtenstein Ski Association, and has already been involved in the Swiss Ski structure through his work with Tina Weirather.
“With Andy Evers, we have been able to hire a very experienced and successful trainer thanks to his many years of experience in the World Cup,” said Alpine Director Stéphane Cattin.
With the hiring of Evers, Swiss Ski is also going to take a new path to address the complex challenges of training diverse athletes including junior skiers and those returning from injury.
One reason for this new direction is the success of several young athletes on the European Cup this year – with 16 wins and the men’s overall victory, the athletes were quite successful and will need a bridge to the next level of competition.
“Swiss Ski has always wanted to have a strong and, above all, big team with young athletes,” Cattin explained. “We have now achieved this thanks to the good and continuous work in the junior field and the European Cup.”
It was clear to the Swiss Ski leadership that a new and more specific plan for such a broad and diverse speed group needed to be established.
“The potential of every athlete has to be managed optimally and a great focus on individual training has to be applied. We have to invest in the future,” Cattin continued. “The tasks in the speed team will therefore be split up as follows: Andy Evers will assume responsibility for the speed disciplines and the responsibility for the athletic development of the advancing athletes. Evers is supported in the development of Jörg Roten’s team. Roten, a long-term Swiss Ski coach, will be responsible for the coordination of all groups to ensure ideal training conditions.”
