ARTE THERME, Italy — Following the cancellation of the last World Cup of the year scheduled for Abtenau, Austria, the U.S. Disabled Alpine Ski Team opened World Cup Finals Monday in Italy. In three days of racing, Stephani Victor wrapped up the overall World Cup title and Crystal Globes in both slalom and giant slalom.
Competition opened with slalom as Victor piloted to the World Cup podium for the seventh time (four wins) this season, this time in second with Laurie Stephens (sit-ski) just off the top three in fourth. Victor, who has won all previous World Cup slalom's handily took home the Crystal Globe in the discipline.
Brad Washburn (standing) was the top men's slalom racer finishing sixth with Ralph Green (standing) in 15th. Nick Catanzarite (sit-ski) led the men's sit-skiers with ninth.
Victor then went on to capture the World Cup title in giant slalom on Tuesday, finishing fourth behind Stephens, but compiling enough points for the crown throughout a season that included a victory and two seconds in the discipline.
Standing women Elitsa Storey (standing) and Hannah Pennington (standing) finished 11th and 12th respectively while Washburn again led U.S. men with 11th. Gerald Hayden (sit-ski) and Chris Devlin-Young (sit-ski) went 7-8 for a pair of top 10 finishes to lead the sitting men.
Stephens then took over Wednesday, winning both the super G in Arte Therme and the SG Crystal Globe as Victor again nailed a podium with second to finish in a tie for third overall in the discipline. Storey again lead the standing women with seventh.
On the men's side, Devlin-Young picked up the pace for third, while Carl Burnett (sit-ski) rounded out the top five and Washburn tied for 11th for the top standing male finish.
Victor's 850 points towered over nearest overall finisher Claudia Loesch of Austria by 145 points as the United States finished second to Austria in the Nations Cup standings.
