Deville, Hirscher knotted in lead after Adelboden first run

By Published On: January 8th, 2012Comments Off on Deville, Hirscher knotted in lead after Adelboden first run

Wind and falling snow played a role from the middle of the first run of the Adelboden slalom with the surface deteriorating from the first skier. Marcel Hirscher and Cristian Deville tied for the first run lead with six early runners – add Mario Matt, Ivica Kostelic, Steve Missillier and Manfred Moelgg –  within a second.

As has become standard this season, skiers starting in the second half of the field had no chance to match the times of those racing on a smoother course. Italian Stefano Gross charged to ninth with bib 24 and American Nolan Kasper picked his way to tenth from the 19th start, with all ahead of them skiers who started in the top ten.

There were a large number of DNF’s with US racers Bode Miller and Colby Granstrom both exiting late in the run high on the final pitch, Will Gregorak made it through the first interval timer and Jimmy Cochran barely got on course before skiing out. Canadian Julien Cousineau clutched his knee after crashing. Brad Spence went to his back then recovered by taking a flush backwards. Spence got a finish but more than three seconds out. Will Brandenburg, Ted Ligety and Mike Janyk will make a second run.
