EINSIEDELN, Switzerland — The FIS Grand Prix summer competition wrapped up in Einsiedeln, Switzerland, on Friday with the U.S. Ski Team's Bill Demong finishing fifth in the event and sixth in the overall tour standings.
The nordic combined competitions in the summer involve athletes jumping off in-runs covered in plastic and racing cross-country with special inline skates that mimic the ski stride.
In Friday's competition, Demong was ninth, starting 42 seconds back. Ronny Heer of Switzerland won the competition followed by Austrians Mario Stecher and David Kreiner in second and third.
Johnny Spillane, the only other member of the U.S. Ski Team to compete, was 21st.
Earlier in the week on Tuesday, weather was a factor in the second of three competitions. The athletes in Oberstorf, Germany, had to use their jump results from the previous day due because it was too windy to compete.
Demong led the U.S. finishers in Germany in 19th, followed by Spillane in 23rd.
