Deer Valley: Dashinski, Guo take wind-shortened aerials{mosimage}DEER VALLEY, Utah – Olympic silver medalist Joe Pack and Olympics-bound Emily Cook were both sixth Saturday night in a weather-whipped World Cup aerials meet that was limited to one round for men and women as the Chevrolet Freestyle International concluded under the lights at Deer Valley resort.

NBC will televise coverage of the meet, part of USSA’s 10 Weeks to Torino pre-Olympic competitions, Sunday at 3 p.m. ET and OLN will have freestyle coverage Sunday at 5 p.m. ET as part of its 10 Weeks to Torino programming.

Dmitri Dashinski of Belarus was the men’s winner with 130.53 points. Pack had 119.25 with defending World Cup champion Jeret ‘Speedy’ Peterson eighth following a delay of almost two hours because of strong winds and a crash by Russian Dmitri Arkhipov at the start of the round. Arkhipov was aerials champion at Deer Valley during the 2003 World Championships. He was hospitalized with a concussion and shoulder injury, officials said.

‘It was a long day. The wind is our nemesis’ Pack said. ‘You don’t want to see anyone else go to the hospital, so we were playing it safe … but we also got it done for Deer Valley and all they’ve meant to the U.S. team and our sport.’

Earlier, Xinxin Guo of China led what was to be the women’s qualifying round with 98.82 points with Canadian Veronika Bauer runner-up at 93.76. When the winds arrived in force as darkness fell, organizers declared the one women’s round as official and turned their attention to getting the men’s competition completed.

‘It was pretty windy when we went’ Cook said, ‘but it was good enough to compete.’

Cook had 89.61 points with a full-full (two twists, two flips) and said her focus, since she already is guaranteed an Olympic team berth from winning the U.S. Ski Team Olympic trials, is on consistency and improving her jumps.

The World Cup heads next to Lake Placid, N.Y., for the Nature Valley Freestyle Cup Friday through Sunday. There will be two moguls events and an aerials competition in the final qualifying events before the U.S. Olympic team is announced Jan. 25 at Deer Valley.
