Cross Country: U.S. women second in Milan World Cup team sprint
U.S. cross country skiers Kikkan Randall and Jessica Diggins took second place in a World Cup team sprint today (Jan. 15) in Milan, Italy.
The American duo finished with a time of 16 minutes, 15.6 seconds, crossing the line just less than a second behind Swiss winners Ida Ingemarsdotter and Hanna Brodin. Canadians Perianne Jones and Chandra Crawford rounded out the podium in third.
“In the third exchange Jessica fell but I was not nervous, I know all can happened in team sprint,” said Randall. “I pushed hard to get back into the race, it cost some extra energy but I made it and I am happy to be on the podium with Jessica and also with our friends from Canada. We did a training camp with the Canadians this summer and pushed each other to a high level.”
Ingemarsdotter made a decisive move in the last lap of the last leg. She took the lead, opened up a gap and only Randall and Crawford could follow.
“I am lucky to be a part of the North American team,” said Crawford. “It is really nice to be on the podium together with them, we have a lot of fun together. The course here was flat and fast – I like it – and also the people here in Milan are enthusiastic and cheered for everybody.”
Russians Alexey Petukhov and Nikolay Morilov took the men’s victory ahead of the Swedish team of Calle Halfvarsson and Teodor Peterson, who finished just two tenths of a second behind. Italians David Hofer and Fulvio Scola caimed third place another four-thenths of a second behind.
Americans Andy Newell and Simeon Hamilton finished 19th.
