Cortina: Riesch takes second super G

German Maria Riesch won her first race in more than a year in the twice delayed super G at Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, Monday by a slim .04 of a second margin over Austrian Elisabeth Goergl.
Renate Goetschl, the Cortina win record holder with 10, had her fourth podium of the season, and first here, in third while the winner of Saturday's Cortina downhill, Lindsey Vonn, was fourth, a placing better than her super G finish a day ago.
After finishing sixth in the two previous races here, Canadian Britt Janyk moved up to fifth, and Julia Mancuso took sixth.
The race had been moved twice, both time by too much snow. It was originally scheduled for Aspen, Colorado Dec. 8 and then had been scheduled to precede the Cortina calendar on Jan. 18.

The race had been moved twice, both times by too much snow. It was originally scheduled for Aspen, Colorado Dec. 8 and then had been scheduled to precede the Cortina calendar on Jan. 18.
Colder temperatures and an overcast Monday kept fans away in droves, but made for good racing conditions, though it made for a bumpy track as grooves remaining from the weekends racing froze up.
"Today it was perfect for me," Riesch said. "The conditions were fair for everyone.
''Yesterday I was really disappointed. I was second and fifth in the other super-G's (this season) and 18th place was tough to accept mentally. But I just stayed cool and (got) not too upset and I was optimistic for today.''
Riesch trailed Goergl midway through her run, but made no mistakes on the more technical bottom section to claim her fifth career victory and fifth podium of the season.
Several contenders got bounced off the course, including yesterday's winner Maria Holaus and overall World Cup tour leader Nicole Hosp.
Reisch vaulted to the top of the super G standings and leads Anja Paerson by 66points. Mancuso is third and Goergl fourth. Overall leader Nicole Hosp held on to her tour lead over Vonn by a narrow 21pts.
