Earlier this week, FIS received of a total of five applications from candidates for the organization of FIS World Championships in 2020 and 2021, but only one for the alpine event in 2021. By the May 12015 deadline, the following candidacies have been submitted:

  • One application for the 2020 FIS Ski Flying World Championships submitted by Planica, Slovenia
  • Three applications for the 2021 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships submitted Oberstdorf, Germany; Planica, Slovenia; and Trondheim, Norway
  • One application for the 2021 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships submitted by Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy

“Just weeks after the successful FIS World Championships in 2015, FIS is pleased at the interest for the organization of these important events. Experienced Organizers, including the world’s premium resorts’ desire to host FIS World Championships, underlines their importance in the global sports calendar,” commented FIS President Gian Franco Kasper.

A first briefing with the candidates will take place during the FIS Calendar Conference in Varna, Bulgaria, in early June. Their detailed concept for the project is due by Sept. 1, 2015 based on a specific FIS Questionnaire, containing details such as plans for sports organization, logistics, accommodation, transportation, security, media, communications, marketing, ceremonies, the environment, spectator services and fan experience.

The FIS Inspection Group members, led by Sarah Lewis FIS Secretary General, will review the project in detail together with the candidates during this phase from May 1-Sept. 30, 2015. Thereafter a meeting with each of the candidates will take place during the FIS Technical Committee Meetings in early October after which each candidate will finalize its concept for the FIS World Championships.

The FIS Council will then elect the organizers of the 2020 and 2021 FIS World Championships at the 50thInternational Ski Congress on June 9, 2016 in Cancun, Mexico. During the FIS Congress week, each candidate will have a chance to present their candidatures to the extended FIS family and discuss their plans at dedicated exhibition stands. They will also show their projects to the respective Technical Committees before the final presentation to the FIS Council on June 7, 2016.
