Renate Goetschl was fastest in World Cup downhill training for the second straight day Thursday.
CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — Renate Goetschl was fastest in World Cup downhill training for the second straight day Thursday.
Goetschl has won a record nine times on the Olimpia delle Tofane course and appears poised to add to her total with three races scheduled this weekend — a super G Friday, the downhill Saturday and a giant slalom Sunday.
Goetschl sped down the 2.8-kilometer (1.7-mile) course in 1 minute, 31.74 seconds, 0.13 seconds quicker than downhill standings leader Lindsey Kildow of the United States.
“I know this course in my head. I don’t have to think,” Goetschl said.
Another American, Julia Mancuso, was third, another 0.01 seconds back. She was the only skier faster than Goetschl at two checkpoints midway through the course, but lost time at the bottom.
Kildow leads Goetschl in the standings by 15 points, with Mancuso third and 74 points behind. Goetschl won the last downhill in Altenmarkt on Saturday, while Kildow crashed out.
“Now, it’s interesting for me because I’m not so far behind Lindsey,” Goetschl said.
Two-time overall World Cup champion Anja Paerson was fourth, 0.21 seconds behind Goetschl.
Current overall leader Marlies Schild and fellow Austrian Nicole Hosp, who is second overall, are skipping the downhill. They plan to race the super G and giant slalom.
With the temperature hovering at freezing, conditions were excellent. The course was hard and icy, although vision was difficult with low cloud cover.
